Welcome to the Universal Protocol Training Page for Procedures Outside of the OR. The purpose of this competency is to establish and communicate the hospital's policy on Universal Protocol for Procedures Outside of the OR. The Universal Protocol focuses on safety for all procedures (that is, all surgical and nonsurgical invasive procedures that expose patients to more than minimal risk). Hospitals can enhance safety by correctly identifying the patient, making a correct diagnosis, selecting the appropriate procedure, identifying the correct site of the procedure, positioning the patient properly before surgery, and providing all necessary equipment.
The Universal Protocol is based on the following principles:
-
Wrong person, wrong site, and wrong procedure surgery can and must be prevented.
-
A robust approach using multiple, complementary strategies is necessary to achieve the al of eliminating all wrong-person, wrong-site, and wrong-procedure events.
-
Active involvement and use of effective methods to improve communication among all members of the procedure team are important for success.
-
To the extent possible, the patient and as needed, the family, are involved in the process.
-
Consistent implementation of a standardized protocol is most effective in achieving safety.
Who should take it and how often? All clinical staff who are involved in invasive procedures taking place outside of the OR will be required to review the educational module and complete the quiz annually.
