Introduction:
The Joint Commission on the
Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the Massachusetts Board
of Registration in Medicine and the American Society of Anesthesiologists
have all created guidelines for safe administration of Moderate (Conscious)
Sedation. Specifically, JCAHO requires that practitioners who administer
sedation be trained in the safe use of the sedating medications and in the
rescue of patients who inadvertently slip into a deeper than expected level
of sedation. In response to these guidelines, BIDMC policy requires that
several steps be completed before practitioners can obtain privileges in
Sedation.
|
|
First, the practitioner must read the
BIDMC policy on
Moderate Sedation (CP-03).
Second, the practitioner must obtain training in the safe use of
sedative medications. This on-line training module will satisfy this
requirement.
Third, the practitioner must pass the on-line exam.
Fourth, have appropriate rescue training.
Finally, the practitioner must
appropriately request and be granted these privileges from their department
head and from the BIDMC credentialing committee.

|
Physicians must complete
this training every 2 years prior to recredentialling and will receive 2
hours of Risk management CME credits. Nurses must complete this training
every year.
